Hathersage St. Michael's C of E (A) Primary School

PSHE & RSE Curriculum

Intent

Our intention is that when children leave Hathersage St. Michael’s CE (A) Primary School, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being.

Our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

Implementation

EYFS - In the Foundation Stage, PSHE is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the curriculum. The objectives taught are the Personal, Social and Emotional Development statements from ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ and the PSED Early Learning Goals. Reception also uses The PSHE Association Scheme of Work materials. (see below)

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 - At Key Stage 1 and 2, PSHE is taught through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. We ensure we cover the Health and Well-Being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World Learning Opportunities set out in the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, which comprehensively cover the statutory Health Education and Relationships Education guidance. In KS2 PSHE is taught in year groups to enable us to support learning and address any matters arising at an age appropriate level in line with our curriculum planning.

The PSHE Association Scheme is a high-quality PSHE programme which also covers economic wellbeing, careers and enterprise education, as well as education for personal safety, including assessing and managing risk.

At Hathersage St. Michael’s, in addition to Relationships Education, we also teach aspects of Sex Education that is covered in our Science Curriculum. Alongside this we teach about different kinds of relationships, including same sex relationships, and gender identity because it is important that our children should have an understanding of the full diversity of the world they live in and be prepared for life in modern Britain.

PSHE is taught through a termly theme with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level). Each Term is then split into mini-themes:

Autumn:  Relationships

Families and Friendships, Safe Relationships, Respecting Ourselves and Others

Spring: Living in the Wider World

Belonging to a Community, Media Literacy and Digital Resilience, Money and Work

Summer: Health and Wellbeing (including Sex Education)

Physical Health and Mental Wellbeing, Growing and Changing, Keeping Safe

It also identifies links to British Values, and SMSC and is taught in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and ethos of our Church of England school.

Wider Curriculum

  • We believe in supporting our children to help them to build resilience, independence and confidence; embrace challenge; foster a love of learning; and increase their level of happiness. We do this through the language we use in class, praising children for their efforts, celebrating their achievements and using language to encourage children to change their way of thinking. This supports both our school and PSHE aims and values.
  • PSHE, including SMSC and British Values, is an integral part of the whole school curriculum, and is therefore often taught within another subject area.
  • Visitors such as emergency services, complement our PSHE curriculum to offer additional learning.
  • As a Church of England school,we encourage our pupils to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We challenge all of our pupils to be courageous advocates and look for opportunities to show the school values of Hope, Friendship, Honesty, Perseverance, Forgiveness and Respect.
  • Assemblies are linked to PSHE, British Values and SMSC and cover any additional sessions that would benefit the whole school.
  • PSHE, British Values and SMSC displays throughout school reinforce the PSHE curriculum enabling children to make links.

Impact

By the time our children leave our school family they will:

  • be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life
  • be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society
  • appreciate difference and diversity
  • recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty
  • be  able to understand and manage their emotions
  • be able to look after their mental health and well-being
  • be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
  • understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level
  • have respect for themselves and others.
  • have a positive self esteem

Family Support

We are constantly developing packs to loan to parents. The packs contain books, stories, links, activities and resources to support parents supporting children at home around the often tricky subjects of Bereavement, Illness of a loved one, Stranger Danger, Divorce, Feelings etc.

We advise parents to look through the resources first to ensure suitability/appropriateness for your situation.

Please ask at the school office.

Consultation

We carried out our Relationships and Sex Education Parent Consultation (RSE) in May 2021, below are the documents which take into account the outcomes of the consultation. We do not plan on making any changes to our current plans following the positive feedback from our Pupil Voice Survey 22-23, however we will consult again in September 2023.

PSHE & RSE Information

As a part of your child’s education at Hathersage St. Michael’s C of E (A) Primary School, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. PSHE education is the curriculum subject that gives children the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives and meet their full potential.

Our PSHE and Relationships programme of study has been developed using the PSHE Association Programme of Study and Skills Builder, British Values and Church of England School Values to develop a scheme of work that best meets the needs, including the local community context for our school.  The programme of study offers clear progression from KS1 to KS2 building on the work of Development Matters within the EYFS.

During Key Stages 1 and 2, PSHE education offers both explicit and implicit learning opportunities and experiences, which reflect pupils’ increasing independence and physical and social awareness, as they move through the primary phase. It builds on the skills that pupils started to acquire during the Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS) to develop effective relationships, assume greater personal responsibility and manage personal safety, including online.

PSHE education helps pupils to manage the physical and emotional changes at puberty, introduces them to a wider world and enables them to make an active contribution to their communities.

From September 2020, it became a statutory requirement that all schools in England and Wales are teaching Relationship and Sex Education as a fundamental part of the curriculum.  Alt

As part of implementing the RSE curriculum, schools must consult with the children, parents, staff and governors to ensure there is a general consensus on our approaches to policy and the curriculum content. (See Consultation section above).
